Not all of us can have Blaqstarr do an intro on our mixtapes. Our significant others may not be a heavily blog-lauded dj/producer from the D.M.V. (DC/MD/VA). But what you have to realize is this: Artists gravitate towards other artists who share the same vision.
D.C. has long been known for Dischord records and it’s roster of like-minded artists, who also happen to be friends. Ed Banger also works on the same premise. Of course, with that kind of dynamic, as with any group really, you will have strong members that possess charisma, impeccable taste, and impressive skills. Then there are the weak members who ride off the stronger members’ lightning for their fifteen minutes. I’m here to tell you, Jackie O ain’t no Uffie. Don’t get it twisted, Jackie O is the real deal.
Although she’s a relative newcomer, she’s been holding it down in the District with her recently retired monthly, $weat$hop, for over a year now. Her learning curve has been quite short. It doesn’t hurt that she’s got her boyfriend, Dave Nada, showing her the ropes. Upon listening to her mix, it’s easy to see that Dave has rubbed off on her, stylistically of course. And for all you haters, listen up. I don’t care who you know, you still have to have the drive, determination and the skill to make anything happen; especially in a male-dominated industry. When I found out about this booking agency, GirlDjs.ru (NSFW), that manages female djs who spin topless, flashes of pretty faces with no real talent came to mind. Are you really going to hire someone from this agency because of their playlist? Come on! Really? Jackie’s mantra, “I’m fly, but I ain’t no ho,” defies this entire notion of using her sexuality as a means of garnering attention for her craft. We all know how marketing works, in any creative field, it helps if you’re attractive. She distinguishes herself by displaying confidence in both her talent and appearance, rather than selling sex. Jackie’s response to GirlDjs, “It’s one thing to look fly and sexy, but to straight up dj with nothing but stars covering your nips? I’d rather spend time learning how to work the tables rather than spend time worrying how many boners I can inspire.”
In regards to her former monthly, $weat$hop, Jackie decided to take her operation elsewhere. She and partner Lil’ El have recently teamed up with Nouveau Riche luminaries, Steve Love and Nacey to start a new monthly called KIDS. They will be holding it down first Saturdays at DC9. Their first installment will be November 1, featuring mostly hip-hop and ranging from dirty south, crunk, and even dancehall. Jackie and the Kids want you to party responsibly, so in addition to having free Olde English, they will also be giving out free condoms!
Check out Jackie’s new mix. It’s chock full of party bangers, but there’s also a sense of movement, a subtle ebb and flow, throughout the entire mix. She also injects a few edits of her own for her transitions and tracks.
