In D.C., the term “flat out” describes folks who are, in the immortal words of Ray Davies, “dedicated followers of fashion.” Flat Out! is an homage to the burgeoning new D.C. arts district and the vibrant fashion lifestyle that D.C. urban youth culture express on a daily basis. Flat Out! is also heavily inspired by the new breed of pop culture currently dominating the planet.
It’s the pop culture that is blurring the lines of mainstream and independent genres and music. It’s the pop culture that cycles through trends so fast that comebacks overlap. It’s the pop culture that has rappers like T-Pain and Lil’ Wayne become 21st century robotic crooners. And it’s the pop culture that allows Greg Gillis to do what he does, not get sued, and still make assloads of cash in a “failing” industry. Needless to say, it’s a very exciting time in music right now, and we just wanted an excuse to celebrate it every month.
So let’s go back to the root, when disco influenced hip-hop, new wave, and rock, and everyone lined up to hang out at the clubs. Not much has changed really, but at least now, it’s okay to listen to all of those at the same time without inciting any riots.
Come check to the Flat Out! “I Heart DC” inaugural event tonight @ Rock and Roll Hotel. Featuring Dmerit DJs and a whole mess of local talent, listed after the jump.
