Back in the mid-2000’s, my Swedish buddies Division Of Laura Lee were lumped in with the Swedish invasion wave–the result of the press’ attempt to build hype by connecting bands that really didn’t sound alike. The Hives, along with a few others, were the forerunners of that list. DOLL found themselves on this list even though they had nothing to do with their garage-rock counterparts, other than guitars and gender. In fact, I always found DOLL the most interesting of the bunch as they pulled influences from my two favorite places, Dischord Records and Britpop, whilst doing so with passion and sincerity. Unfortunately for the music world, the whole hair-metal thing happened again in the form of emo.
Epitaph Records–their label at the time–decided to focus on more punk/emo whatever and it was no longer wise to invest in Swedish smart-rockers anymore. But the band soldiered on…
Years have passed and DOLL has made their best record yet, “Violence Is Timeless,” just released on Swedish indie label–imadethis.se–via vinyl with a download card and CD. Their newest offering is a scorching rock n’ roll ride that brings to mind equally Queens Of The Stone Age, Sonic Youth, Fugazi and Swedish rockers Silverbullit.
DOLL has just finished a short promo tour of the United States including the House Of Sweden in Washington, DC and plan on coming back next year.
